Highway assist is a combination of adaptive cruise control and lane centering control. Highway assist helps the driver maintain a constant speed and a set interval to potential vehicles in front of the car while also actively steering the car (when possible) to remain in the center of the lane. The working speed range of the function is 0–130 km/h. Highway assist is intended for use on highways but works on any road with clear road markings.
The active steering only works when there are visible road markings on both sides of the lane.
Note: You may have to manually steer the car around sharp bends.
The highway assist function has limitations. Be aware of them before using the function. See Limitations of the highway assist function. Since highway assist includes adaptive cruise control, you must also be aware of the limitations of that function. See Limitations of the adaptive cruise control function.
Highway assist consists of the following sub-functions:
• |
Adaptive cruise control. |
• |
Lane centering control: Under good conditions, it automatically keeps the car centered in the lane and actively steers the car around curves. The driver can override the function by turning the steering wheel. When the driver no longer turns the steering wheel, the function automatically resumes. |
• |
Lane offset assistance: When a larger vehicle is detected, and the driver wants to overtake it, the function controls the vehicle in the offset of the lane center. The offset distance is approximately 20 cm. When the overtaking is complete, the function returns the car to the center of the lane. |
• |
Automatic lane change assist (activated separately): When driving on highways, the car automatically changes lanes when the driver activates the direction indicator lights, if there is enough space and time to complete the lane change. When automatic lane change assist is enabled, highway assist is known as highway assist plus. |
Automatic lane change assist is activated/deactivated through the center display, and has a speed range of 60–130 km/h. An arrow appears on either side of the highway assist symbol

in the driver display and the head-up display when automatic lane change assist is available for that lane.
Note: For the lane change to be carried out, the driver must have both hands on the steering wheel.
To activate/deactivate automatic lane change assist:
1. |
Navigate to .
2. |
Press Auto lange change assist.
Activate and adjust highway assist
Warning
Always set a safe speed and interval adapted to the weather and the surrounding conditions. If the road is slippery or visibility is low, turn off highway assist and take full control of the car. Not doing so could cause an accident leading to death or serious injury.
The highway assist function can be turned on/off by shifting the right stalk on the steering wheel.
To activate highway assist:
1. |
Shift the right stalk down twice.
2. |
The current speed is used as the set speed. The speed is set to 30 km/h if the car is driving below 30 km/h.
3. |
The speed setting and function indicator appears in blue on the head-up display and the driver display, and the message LCC activated appears on the driver display.
When highway assist is activated and the driver accelerates, the speed value turns gray to indicate that it is being overridden by the driver. Once the driver stops accelerating, the speed setting turns solid blue again and the car reduces the speed until it matches the set speed. If the driver overrides the function with light manual steering, the steering wheel icon flashes blue. Once manual steering is stopped, the car resumes lane centering control after a few seconds and the icon returns to solid blue.
To deactivate highway assist:
1. |
Shift the right stalk a half-step up once.
2. |
The speed setting and function indicator is no longer displayed on the head-up display and turns gray in the driver display, and the message LCC canceled appears on the driver display.
Highway assist can also be deactivated by tapping the brakes.
To resume highway assist:
1. |
Press the left thumbstick.
2. |
The previously set speed is used as the set speed. The speed is set to 30 km/h if the car is driving below 30 km/h.
To set the speed to the current speed limit:
1. |
Press the left thumbstick when highway assist is active.
2. |
The current speed limit is used as the set speed.
Note: Setting the speed to the current speed limit does not need speed limit adaptation to be enabled, and the set speed will not automatically update to the speed limit if it changes (unless speed limit adaptation is enabled).
Note: As the driver, you are always responsible for being aware of and following the speed limit.
Automatic lane change assist can be used when there is an arrow on either side of the highway assist symbol

. To use automatic lane change assist:
1. |
Make sure both hands are on the steering wheel, from starting the process and until the car is finished changing lanes.
2. |
Activate the direction indicator lights for the side shown on the symbol, by moving the left stalk slightly or fully up/down.
To adjust the speed:
1. |
Push the thumbstick up/down to decrease/increase the speed in 5 km/h steps. Push and hold to decrease/increase the speed continuously by 1 km/h increments.
To adjust the lead interval:
1. |
Push the left/right button on the thumbstick area to decrease/increase the lead interval by one bar. Three interval settings are available, indicated by 1–5 horizontal bars.
Note: The interval settings are not a fixed distance. The distance to the front varies depending on the set speed.
Highway assist hands-off warning
The highway assist hands-off warning is a safety function that warns the user if no hands are detected on the steering wheel. The warning is shown on the driver display and is accompanied by an audible warning. If there are repeated warnings, the function deactivates highway assist for the current journey.
There are two levels of warning:
• |
If the car does not detect hands on the steering wheel while highway assist is active, a first-level hands-off warning is issued. |
• |
If the car still does not detect hands on the steering wheel shortly after the first-level hands-off warning, a second-level hands-off warning is issued. |
The first level warning is cleared when hands are detected on the steering wheel again.
After a second-level warning:
• |
If the car detects hands on the steering wheel shortly after the warning, highway assist resumes.Note: If three second-level warnings are issued during the same journey, highway assist is no longer available for the current journey. |
• |
If the car still does not detect hands on the steering wheel shortly after the warning, a safe stop is initiated. During a safe stop, the car automatically slows down and stops. Highway assist is no longer available for the current journey.Note: During a safe stop, you can manually take control of the car. |
Limitations of the highway assist function
Since highway assist includes adaptive cruise control, you must also be aware of the limitations of that function. See
Limitations of the adaptive cruise control function. Other factors that might limit the highway assist function include:
• |
Lane markings with low visibility |
• |
Severe weather conditions |
• |
Obstructed sensors or surround view camera |
Additionally, highway assist can be limited by the same factors that limit the system sensors in general. See Limitations of the driver assistance system sensors.
If any sensor fault is detected or if any sensor is blocked, the function immediately switches to standby mode, which does not provide any autonomous driving assistance. A message saying that the function is deactivated is shown on the driver display.
